Which franchise I think is the most overrated of all time?
That’s a very easy answer for me, it’s Halo.
Why is that you ask? Simple, Bungie took a few game modes from PC FPS, slapped them together in a game, gave it a generic human vs aliens setting, added a mediocre single player campaign in which you play a few levels twice and bingo! You have Halo.
Does that make the games bad? Of course not, but when a generic alien FPS is treated as “ZOMG GREATEST GAME EVAR”, “BEFORE HALO WE HAD NOTHING”, “HOLY S*** THIS GAME MARKS JESUS’ SECOND COMING” and you have everyone drooling about something that has been available for decades on PC, then you have one extremely overrated franchise, that brought nothing new to the table (that’s right, making copypasta from the PC is not innovative guys).

Start:
I think the definition of the most overhyped game is called Super Smash Brothers Brawl. You know how they say third times a charm? Well this doesn’t apply here. First of all this “Second coming of Christ” was delayed numerous times which resulted in rabid fanboys and trolls whining on message boards like they were on their rag. Then when it finally ships people tramp over each other to play online which resulted in lag dipped in syrup. The game turned into a slideshow of retards with even MORE bitching on message boards. Then there were so many rumors of there being a ginormus roster of characters on the shipped game from many different series. It looked more like a poor attempt if you ask me. Sure they snagged Snake and Sonic but there wasn’t much else. And, I know it seems like I’m jumping from subject to subject but, what is up with the combat system? 1 button with a directional push?!? It sounds like it was designed by monkeys! The game was just pure overhyped monkey shit. Many people disappointed by roster and broken online mechanics(no voice chat to tell your opponents they got pwned). Even until this day online play is broken. Many dumbfounded about the new Adventure Mode that was a voiceless (and pointless POS). There were little new moves for characters to do and still some were mirror characters. This game just flat out blows donkey sack. I’d be writing a speech to try and describe this to my good people. Oh, and graphics looked almost exactly like melee’s (gamecube game!!!)

Probably the most overrated game of this generation so far is Grand Theft Auto IV. Mainly because it doesn’t “revolutionize” as much as “evolve” the game itself. After Grand Theft Auto 3, many sandbox games came along to try to capitalize on the success it had, for a good reason. The game was fun and it was marketable, to the hardcore at least. Anyway, my point is that everything that is present in GTAIV we have probably seen not only in the prior games of the franchise, but also in a few of those GTA “clones” as we like to call it. sure, the game is really fun like the San Andreas, Vice City and III but does it really deserve all those 10’s it’s getting? No, not even close. I mean, IGN gave it a ten in every category, that’s preposterous.
I don’t understand how this game, which is basically GTA III on steroids twice over, can get a ten (10’s in every category mind you) when Bioshock, a game that ruly revolutionizes gaming, and engages the player in a way like never before, gets a 9.7 from what is a top 3 gaming site in the US. And it’s not just IGN either, popular sites such as GameSpot, 1up.com and magazines like gamepro and gameinformer all gave out perfect scores. It’s truly an enigma.

The most overrated game?
Doom 3, mainly because of so many people say its the scariest game ever made, obviously not true. It still sticks to the “walk past a certain point and something jumps out at you” formula, which is scary at first, but then it gets annoying. There was not much you could do other than shoot monsters and interact with computers and update your PDA. The Key fetching and finding the auxiliary whatchamacallit errands certainly were annoying, didn’t we do this enough in past FPSs? There were several parts where out of nowhere enemies would spawn around you, again, very annoying. The game is very linear, repetitive, and predictable, after a while you could just take one look at the environment and you could tell what will happen next. ID software was trying to make a scary game, but after the 12th monster jumped out at me I was starting to roll my eyes, the game gets tedious after a while. Another thing that hurts it is the lack of new gameplay mechanics, its Doom, just slower paced.
If this game had the fast paced adrenaline pumping action the original Dooms had it wouldn’t feel like a chore to complete, I would have played it more. The graphics and sound are great and it has a good atmosphere, ripped open corpses are everywhere which can be disturbing and painful to look at. The online co-op and mulitiplayer are fun and all, but that is really the only thing I played to keep me from putting the game down. Another thing that hurts it, no new gameplay mechanics, its Doom, just slower paced. In short, Doom 3 is not a bad game, but its not what we were hoping it would be.

Why is it that I play games? That’s right, to have fun. Counter-Strike is not fun, in any sense of the word. The only people who can enjoy it are those poor pathetic souls who’ve been playing CS_dust daily for the last 8 years. And at that point, even they aren’t having any fun. It’s a job, a chore, a routine fever that must be soothed.
So you hear about how Counter-Strike is the best, most popular online shooter, and you feel like trying it out. Have fun dying 20 times before you get a single kill (if you’re lucky). The game is not intuitive, not user friendly, and impossible to get into. An impenetrable wall has been set up around this game. New people can’t get into it. And more depressingly, the long-time fans will never get out of it, and will never experience newer, better shooters.

There’s been numerous games that have redifined the FPS genre. Some of them have done the opposite. So what’s thee mosted overrated game franchise ever?
This answer, for me, is easily Halo. Halo brings nothing new to the table, it’s the same old FPS that we’ve been playing for years. Sure in some levels you have to snipe, while others you run in with machine guns blazing, but is that all the difference we need?
Simple answer; NO! we need something different. Different weapons, items, enemies, settings, SOMETHING!How many times can people play the same old shooter? I got tired of shooters after Halo 2, that’s when all of the originality stopped. We need a FPS that can bring something new to the table, something that is fun and unique. That will be the FPS I’m waiting for, and that will be the FPSW that I will buy.

For me, the most overrated game by far is Halo 3. It’s not a bad game; in fact, I find it to be an alright game. Even so, this game does nothing new to the FPS franchise. The ability to create your own levels has been around for ages for many games. I spent hours playing custom maps on games like Age of Empires 2 about 7 years ago. This isn’t even new to FPSes as you could mod and make new FPS maps in games like Counter-Strike as well. The multiplayer aspect is great, but PC games have had this sort of online for ages now.
What bothers me the most, though, is not a problem with the game. As I have stated above, I think that many aspects of the game are fine. The problem is how people call it the “best game ever.” It is a fine game, and is a decent FPS, but it is in no way revolutionary or amazing as some people make it to be. The game has been granted an amazing amount of hype, with even its own television channel that counted down towards its release. An estimate of $30 million has been spent on advertising this game. I think that this has brought people to think that the game is more than it really is.
The game is a decent FPS, but not the best by any means. It brings nothing new to the table; it just brings old ideas and adds some good graphics to them. The concept of shooting aliens has been around since Space Invaders. The actual gameplay is basically the same as every other FPS, and isn’t that much different from Halo 1-2. Halo 3 just isn’t all that it is said to be.

I think what two series come to mind when someone thinks “overrated” in video games, would be The Halo and Grand Theft Auto series. I’m going to focus on the Halo series, namely Halo 2 and Halo 3. I cannot fathom why these games garner so much attention, it seems the only reason these games are so popular only because the rode the success wave of Halo: Combat Evolved, which deserved the attention because Microsoft didn’t hype it to the ends of the earth. Now, I see how Halo 2 was so hyped, it was that “revolutionary” online console game. Though it came at the expense of less focusing on the story, and more so on the multi-player.
Halo 3 is the worse culprit of being overrated, Microsoft being a big reason. Who thought it would be a good idea to have something like “Gamefuel” Mountain Dew? Was it really necessary to have about 5 commercials running at the same time, consecutively? Also to (most likely) moneyhat review sites, just so the game can get undeserved ratings? Halo 3’s single player is the worst of the 3 by far, disappointing graphics, bad voice acting, and a ruined story. Forge is a good distraction for a while, but gets old. The only thing good I can honestly say about Halo 3 is that it has a good multi-player.

I would have to say that Call of Duty 4 is vastly overrated. Sure the game is fun and has great multiplayer, but the only reason its considered so “great” is because it’s new. Thee are plenty of older games that beat CoD4 in fun factor, but I can’t make everyone look into older FPS. Hell it saddens me that a few of the older FPS games I play have less and less players everyday. CoD4 doesn’t really put that hook feel to it. It feels as if the game is just run and gun, no tactics required. Plus you have a lot of new players online that mess up a whole game on purpose. It’s just a lot of small factors and a few big ones that make this game not the greatest shooter everyone else makes it out to be. In the end, I would rather play Joint Operations, Unreal Tournament 04, or Counterstrike over Call of Duty 4.

I will probably be swarmed and beaten by a mob of crazed fanboys for saying this, but in my opinion Halo is an incredibly overrated franchise. To be honest, it really is the same old generic shooter that we have seen for years. Obviously online multiplayer is fantastic, but, anything else in the game is just boring, generic, or just downright stupid.
One example is that there really have been no major innovations since the addition of online play in Halo 2. Sure, the original Halo was revolutionary in terms of control and gameplay, but to be honest, it wasn’t AS revolutionary as it was made out to be. First of all, any human weapon in the game didn’t feel futuristic at all. Weapons such as the pistol and shotgun looked and felt like the weapons we use in today’s world, when they should have felt advanced and added to the feel of living in the future. Plus, the Covenant weapons seemed sort of silly. I think you could have found a less corny weapon in a sci-fi movie from 1967.
Which brings me to my next point, the story. It is ridiculosy corny. It made me feel as if I playing Starship Troopers: The Game. Really, a futuristic war between the humans and aliens. As if that hasn’t been done before. Also, the story continued on for 3 GAMES. There really were no plot twists, and it wound up seeming sort of tiresome.
So, I’m sorry to all you Halo fans out there, but this is a seriously overrated franchise, and it should have ended a long, long, time ago.

There are a lot of people out there who say that the Halo and GTA series are overrated, well, good for them! However, my beef is not with those games, (who are overrated as being overrated), but with another franchise. One that started in the PS1 era, has incredible graphics, realistic handling and a wide variety of options. Now, you may be wondering, “What’s your problem? That sounds like an awesome game!”. Yes, some people think it’s awesome, but I don’t; I’m talking about Gran Turismo.
Gran Turismo is a game series that so far has 4 games and one semi-half, kinda-sorta sequel, sorta prequel to a game (does that even make sense?). I personally own the first and third incarnation. Now, the games themselves are very pretty and probably contain the best graphics on each system they are on, particularly the PS1 versions. However, as all good gamers know, graphics do not make the game. These “games” are really driving simulators and they completely embrace that fact. Ok, that’s fine, but does that have to make a horrible game!? I hate the fact that the games are simply not fun to play! You drive around a course, trying your best not to crash (not that you even can) and then you make it to the finish line in last place because the other cars actually know how to play while the game sits there and laughs at you. Well, ok, it doesn’t really laugh but it does a lame job of teaching you the ways of the game.
What I’m getting at here is that the game has horrible controls unless you can live through the turmoil and actually get the GOOD cars in the game. But who wants to suffer with all the other crap to get there? Certainly not me.

Being a loyal Nintendo owner since my parents allowed me to be, around 1989, I have an obvious bias standpoint on this issue. I used to own an Xbox so I also got the best of both worlds, being the Halo and GTA franchises. But before I can sit down and really bash games on these two for being ‘overrated’ in terms of their post-installments(ie: Halo 3, GTA4) I have to consider being myself, a Nintendo fanboy, and use a Nintendo franchise that I believe to be truely overrated. My choice then would be to the somewhat recent release of Super Smash Bros. Brawl. The first time my friend showed me Super Smash on the N64, I was flabbergasted. So much material, and it gave homage to some of the greatest Nintendo games I had learned to love. My brothers and I made it an appoint to buy a Gamecube just for Melee, which was to be released just two and a half years later from it’s predecesor on the N64. Everything about Melee truely surpassed my expectations and took the series into a whole new realm. We literatly beat the heck out of this game, collecting all the trophies, characters and levels…it truely made this game an acheivement, years after we had already collected everything that we could, as we still bring it out occasionally.
A little over six years later, and Brawl, the latest installment for the Super Smash franchise, would and could only be better, right? Online was a must, new characters and levels, a must, and new gameplay options would make this new game the best of the best. Or so I thought. The graphics were slightly improved, the new characters could all be unlocked within an hour or two and same with the levels which took away from some of the challenge in the previous titles. Above all the online was and still is horrific. I can’t play against my brother who lives less than 40 minutes away without being disconnected every match or couple of matches. I love the franchise in general, but this specific game of this franchise should have been much better, ecspecially after about seven years. I know many anticipated this title, but after the completly noticable flaws within this game, to still hear people sticking up for this game makes me believe that some Nintendo fans are truely ignorant. This game SHOULD have been better after seven years. In my personaly opionion, when I want a new game, it still comes up as a game I should get rid of, but in the back of my mind…I’m hoping they fix/address more of the online problems, so it will still remain in my collection.

Alright, I’m going to fearlessly tackle the single largest target that exists: The Legend of Zelda (audible gasps are heard from the crowd, along with a few poorly stifled snickers.) But hear me out—no matter how great they may be, you don’t have to look any further than the most universally loved game series out there, because people are accustomed to Zelda and thus overlook its many imperfections. Our quest often begins with our hero-to-be, Link, portrayed as a lazy or clueless good-for-nothing do-nothing farm-boy elf-kid, who is given a sword and shield on a whim. Suddenly, despite never being relied upon for anything meaningful in his entire life, his inner heroism awakens (or something) and he bravely goes off to face any kind of danger.
Of course, he is completely unaware that this is his destiny, as is the entire populace of Hyrule (or Waterworld or wherever Wind Waker was supposed to take place), even though the Legend of the Hero has been passed down through time. The entire world is perceptually aware of the Legend and all that it entails, right down to the fricking clothes the Hero wore—and yet nobody recalls what the NAME of the Hero was? Since Zelda games require there to be a Link and he is required to be the Hero, the events imply some sort of predestination—meaning that Link cannot lose and Ganon/Ganondorf cannot win, so why are we even bothering with this bloated never-ending quest and why does anyone care if Link can take 712 hits before dying (and that’s WITHOUT finding heart meter refills in the wild)?
Then there’s the story progression, which places Link on an endless course to collect any number of insignificant doodads that will magically beat the evil magic that the Hero cannot otherwise overcome. First, Link will have to collect some magic jewelry, then find a magical inanimate carbon rod, then maybe some bronzed, enchanted tadpole spleens before finally getting his hands on one-eighth of one-third of the Triforce. No matter what you’re currently collecting, Link’s seemingly omnipotent guide (whether it’s a magical talking owl, a magical talking boat or a magical talking bookshelf) will swear up, down & diagonally that whatever you’re currently after is all you need to defeat the evilest evil ever known. Every game series on the planet, from Mario to Halo to McKids offers better goal progression than this, and that’s just sad.
Let’s not overlook the formulaic puzzles—pushing blocks, opening treasure chests, defeating enemies, et cetera—then right when Link needs a new item in order to progress, it’s usually either in the same room as he is or just one room over! Gee, now how do I get out of THIS room—I know, I’ll just use the magic arrows/ocarina/mask/boomerang/allen wrench I just picked up! And how about those boss battles—I mean, it seems like in at least half of them, the boss is completely impervious to everything Link can throw at it, until Link takes advantage of some resource in the boss room to expose their weak point. Can’t the legendary Hero find a way to beat these monstrosities without outside help, and if not, why are the bosses so stupid as to wait for Link in the one room in the entire game where he can kill them?
On that subject, doesn’t it seem a little suspicious to anyone else that according to Legend, everyone else lives and dies but Ganondorf is always “sealed away” to fight another day? With how mind-numbingly easy he makes it for Link to prevail, it makes me think that perhaps Ganondorf is in reality a loyal servant of the royal family, who comes during times of strife to punish the simple townsfolk when they begin to suspect that perhaps life is not so wonderful under the Hyrulean monarchy. It’s the classic tale of the lesser of two evils—they just trick some dopey kid with bright-eyed idealism into thinking he’s some kind of Legendary Hero, get him to endorse the royal family (hence the need for a cute princess) and the townspeople are happy again to be the poor, downtrodden slaves of an evil empire, while Ganondorf (the true hero) is rewarded with power and immortality.
It seems to me that there is more, much more to the Zelda series than most choose to acknowledge—and though I enjoy it, I can’t view them in the same epic light that the rest of the world does without recognizing how overrated they really are. And in case you’re not yet convinced, in closing I’d like to dedicate this posting to your favorite Zelda character and mine, Navi: “HEY, LISTEN, HEY, LISTEN, HEY, LISTEN, HEY, LISTEN, HEY, LISTEN, HEY, LISTEN, HEY, LISTEN, HEY, LISTEN, HEY, LISTEN, HEY, LISTEN, HEY, LISTEN, HEY, LISTEN, HEY, LISTEN!”

Two More Days To Go Before Deadline.

“Hey guys, I just finished these CG models, but the deadline is in a week, so let’s just copy paste the gameplay scripts”. You know what I’m talking about, it’s the infamous Final Fantasy series. In gaming consoles, the controller usually needs a variety of buttons to execute different actions, because….you know, you’re supposed to take part in the game SOMETIME TO DO STUFF. No, walking encountering random monsters and browsing through a menu is not “doing stuff”, it’s being a complete brand slave. Well, aren’t those pretty graphics? Too bad this isn’t a MOVIE. Well, isn’t that a good story? Ok, it’s cool, where’s my gameplay? Yes, that thing games are usually made of and the main reason I play games, hence the word. Let’s be serious, the main attraction of this franchise is the story/cinematics, when the most important factor of ANY game is gameplay, thing that hasn’t changed in over 10 games. We’re being a bit mediocre, aren’t we? I usually play games to interact with the game, not to see how the game interacts with itself. I’m not controlling a character, I’m walking him over through dungeons that require minimal mental capabilities in order to be cleared. I rest my case when I found a good leveling tactic on a walkthrough “go to a field, get a turbo controller and set the circle button overnight, you’ll get around 10 levels, if you don’t have one, then just fasten the button with a rubber band.” It’s like getting a book with the main attraction being flipping the pages. Still, fans will eat whatever companies are feeding them, so there will never be a stop to this.

Certain genres are associated with games that are thought to be the best in that genre. For instance when one thinks about the action/adventure genre The Legend of Zelda comes to mind; and when one thinks about the platforming genre Mario is the first game that is thought of. The Resident Evil series is similarly associated with the survival/horror genre. Resident Evil creates a sense of suspense and danger, as a survival/horror game is supposed to do, but it does so in the wrong way. The games are known for putting the gamer in situations where enemies crowd in on the gamer in such a way that the gamer feels a sense of urgency that other games have trouble doing. However, I feel that Resident Evil does this not through good level design, but through poor control design.
Players are forced to stop dead in their tracks in order to start shooting at the enemies. This is where most of the “suspense” comes in to play. When the only way to kill the enemies is to let them get closer while you shoot at them it ruins the gameplay, in my opinion. The object of the game becomes to move as far away from the enemies as you can in order to kill as many enemies as you can before they reach you.
This poor control scheme could have been necessary because of the hardware that the original games were created for. If you only have one control stick or d-pad then it is necessary to do this in order to aim. However, just because this was the best way to control the game at the time does not make it a great game. As such I feel people overrate Resident Evil simply because it is as good as it can be.

Results will be up Friday night. I want to thank everyone for participating. Don’t let yourself be discouraged if you aren’t one of the four because we hope to do these contests regularly. You all did a great job, and I wish you could all win a 500 point prize, but money doesn’t grow on trees.
Anyways, as I previously stated, winners will be announced Friday at midnight central standard time.
